I’m a fan of Microsoft Security Essentials. The other free products are just stripped down versions of the paid products and lack many important features.

Hi Zofia,

While I respect your opinion I must disagree. MS Security Essentials is a complete product where the others are lacking features. Just look on the sites and you will find comparison charts of the free and paid products.

I’m curious about if you located any no cost antivirus program that operates really well with Windows Vista. The software that I have used in the past is AVG free antivirus and it does not function well with Vista any more. What are your feelings on Avast anti-spyware?

I’ve found that Microsoft security essentials is ok if you have nothing superior. Fortunately for most people you can find significantly better free software options that are faster and more accurate at finding malware on your hard drive. More to the point, you’ll find much better programs which can be active and stop viruses prior to they install. Of course MS also defends real-time, but is not as powerful.

Bob, your point that Jungle Disk doesn’t do de-duplication across computers is very important. I am signing up to use Jungle Disk and was planning to use it across multiple computers to help sync and clean up duplicate files. I will now backup all computers to a single server and have Jungle Disk backup from there.
