We just moved mldserviceslex.com to a new virtual server at GoDaddy, and when we went to setup our email we started getting bounce backs with the error 554 Message refused (in reply to end of DATA command).
Great! What could the problem be? Went to GoDaddy’s support site, and really did not find much except for setup info and all looked to be OK.
Went out to Google and typed in the error plus godaddy vps server like this:
554 Message refused. (in reply to end of DATA command) +godaddy +vps
Wow! Look at the results and some of you all are just down right mean. Some go as far as accusing GoDaddy of knowing an issue exists and that they were not going to fix the problem. So now I am afraid to call support, because I figure that I am going to hear the same response!
Well not this time. I dealt with two fantastic support people and within 20 minutes the problem appears to be resolved.
The tech had me shut down Spamassassin on my VPS and send an email and it went through!!
service spamassassin stop
Sent test message from my mldservices account to an yahoo account. Working.
Next up I am told is to do an update to Spamassassin.
sa-update
Now I am told to restart Spamassassin.
service spamassassin restart
Now another test. WooHoo!! It still works!
Great Job by the GoDaddy support staff.

Great post, thanks!
You have tested it and writing form your personal experience or you find some information online?
Phiber
Tested myself, and posted my success. I now run this command every time a new domain is created on the server.

Hi Matthew, and thanks for the comment on our blog. We work hard to bring new and interesting items to our readers. I read the post that you have up, and thought it was worth sharing.
Thanks for saving me a huge amount of time and hassle.

Your Welcome.
Matthew
Thanks!!!
You saved me. For weeks I had the problem and could not solve.
Pablo
No problem. Not sure why Godaddy support makes no mention of this in their documentation as this is one of my most read posts!
Matthew
What if you are not using Spam Assassin and the error is still happening, even removing Norton, switching from Incredimail to Outlook to find it happens in both programs (and via web login), and the only thing you can send is emails to previous contacts and ONLY if you remove all links in the body and signature?
It sounds to me like a GoDaddy issue, not a Spam Assassin issue. I would be curious to know….has anyone else had this issue with no Spam Assassin on their system?
Torrey
The article is written for a server running Spam Assassin on GNU/Linux. It seems you’re working with a desktop. I have sent you an email with an offer to help you get this straightened out.
Sincerely
Matthew
Wow… so simple, but yet so awesome! I’ve been messing with Spamassassin on godaddy’s fedora vps for a while now, this is the only solution that got it to work!
Thanks so much!
ThinkMud,
No problem. I need to get more posts up on some other odd issues and their fixes.
Matthew
You’re my hero!
I’ve had this problem for a week and found nothing (no help from GoDaddy) until I saw this. Worked like a charm!
Hi Chris, Glad that this solution worked for you, but I’m surprised Godaddy did not help.
Does anyone know if the issue get fixed?
Abraham
In our instance the command to update spamassassin fixes the issue. Please provide more information about your issue and maybe someone can assist.
thanks,
Matt
