Google Voice:

I recently received an invite to Google Voice (GV) but I am unable to find a local number! But I was offered a lot of numbers from surrounding communities.

What to do?

Well for the last month I have been waiting for numbers in Lexington KY to become available, but I would like to start using the features that GV offers, so I started to look at the other communities phone numbers. My problem is that even though we are in the same area code, some of the other numbers offered are not considered local and charges will apply.

How do I figure out which ones would work and which ones would not?

Well a quick search of Google and I have found a solution. A site called Local calling Guide has an option to enter the area code and prefix for your “from” location and your “to” location, which will then let you know if the call is local.

Nice!

I have the same problem, but none of the prefixes offered by GV allow local calls to be made from Lexington. After wading through tons of numbers in the 859 area code, here’s a list of prefixes that GV offers as of 12/19/2009:

    334
    379
    428
    429
    474
    904
    951
    955
    982

Pairing them with Lexington numbers on that site (you can use 255 as a test case), they are all long distance.

Right now I’m using a number out of WV where I have family, so at least they can call me local from a landline. But I’ll have to wait until some closer prefixes are provided by GV before I switch.
